Lizzy, Darcy & Jane
by Joanna Norland

As Jane Austen writes Pride & Prejudice, the boundary between reality and fiction begins to blur…

In 1795 Jane Austen began writing a novel which she entitled First Impressions, but which was published as Pride and Prejudice. Its popularity has led to its being filmed, dramatised and televised, but what was happening to Jane at this time which enabled her to create this enduring masterpiece? Authors often speak of their characters as controlling their own destinies; Jane seems to have experienced this phenomenon.

In Lizzy, Darcy and Jane, Jane Austen pits her wit and will against her greatest adversary and ally - the intrepid heroine of Pride and Prejudice, Elizabeth Bennet. Heady with her first taste of love for the dashing Tom LeFroy, Jane Austen creates Elizabeth in an exuberant moment of inspiration, and Mr Darcy takes on the role of her arch enemy and reluctant admirer. But when Jane's romance with Tom sours, she begins to change the plot. The fates of the author, the novel and its heroine are at stake. Elizabeth Bennet must take action to overcome pride and prejudice.

Directed by Phil Harper whose previous productions include An Experiment with an Air Pump and the NODA award nominated Colder Than Here. In our 61st year Codsall Dramatic Society are excited to present this production which takes a fresh look at what might have happened in Jane Austen's life and what led her to write one of the greatest novels of all time.
